eski new

little red square-little prince

two children books for adults:

i wanted to compare two books which i admire. For both book, it is mentioned that they are for children, infact they have nothing to do with children but somehow they are related to children’s world. The illustrations of the writer Antoine de Saint Exupery in little prince, are striking. The illustrations serve for the story of the book. In the book of El lissitzky’s, the story is the illustrations and the design without a narrative, because the red square is the main character of the story. In both books, there is a world of methaphor. Every character refer to something or someone in the reader’s world. There is a depth of symbolism with every little detail and as a reader you relate and make connections between all the elements and characters, in both stories. The book “little prince” had been so much important to me for a long time because i am impressed by the narrative story in it and i love the illustrations but i wonder about the real story of the red square in el lissitky’s mind, i guess it also has a narrative story that is hiden under.

helvetica

“Originally called Neue Haas Grotesk.  The aim of the new design was to create a neutral typeface that had great clarity, no intrinsic meaning in its form, and could be used on a wide variety of signage. ” * wikipedia.

I guess the aim of the design of helvetica had reached on top in 50 years. It is everywhere ! It is in our daily life. In this age of computers, it is our common handwriting . Helvetica was developed in 1957 by Max Miedinger with Eduard Hoffmann.  It has been a half century and it is still very common. It hasn’t lost any value and it isn’t still an oldskool type. It is a classic without traditional uses. Not everybody likes it but everybody get involved with it. When I was searching for some posters with helvetica, I found out people expressing their hate to helvetica, with helvetica ! I think this points out the importance of it. Helvetica is a font which is a leading actor in a documentary film of Gary Hustwit. I am also impressed by the experimental use of helvetica in David Carson’s work. It is better to look at the designs with helvetica to understand how helvetica is inspirational for many designers:

Saul Bass’s designs had always been inspirational for me. Not only because I love his illustrations, but also his way of thinking. I personally think that, his works point out “the idea” through  2 dimensional  illustrations. The modest illustrations that he draws empower the feeling of his work. The metaphors in his mind incarnate in his designs in the purest way and this reinforce the meaning in his work. I , personally feel very close to his understanding of visualization. I think he is not trying to create an image that is hard to create, he is trying to focus on “the feeling” of another medium like cinema, theater,..etc. and transfer it in to another medium which is the graphic design. He expresses him self trough these words:   “My initial thoughts about what a title can do was to set mood and the prime underlying core of the film’s story, to express the story in some metaphorical way. I saw the title as a way of conditioning the audience, so that when the film actually began, viewers would already have an emotional resonance with it.  ” I guess what  he is trying to is to  built a bridge between viewers and the art medium. It is like a secret  invitation that is sent to people’s minds and hearts and i find it really strong. The way he creates the 2 dimensional illustrations and the way he uses the perspective ( the use of non using) and the color, remind us children drawings. I think this association serves for his understanding of design and points out his sincerity of avoiding to create an image of “impossible” .

*(And I just realized that he has made a book for children – http://grainedit.com/2007/12/03/henris-walk-to-paris-designed-by-saul-bass)

Barbara Kruger was a muse for Rodchenko, I find her work very impressive in terms of the collaboration of photography and graphic design, so  I wanted to mention about her work after looking to Rodchenko’s work.

“Revolution” in Photography

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Alexander Rodchenko was the name of the “revolution” in Photography; not because he made a revolution about photography but his name was the name that came to mind if we want to see “the revolution” , in the photographs. Before, he was a great graphic designer, but what i find striking about him, is his decision of becoming a photographer. Looking to his photographs, make me think that  his challenge was “documenting”. I think this was his reason of becoming a photographer. He wanted to share his witnesses of Bolshevik Revolution and its effects on society. His photographic works are famous by their unusual perspectives. He wanted to liberate photography from conventions and from the standard belly-button perspective and thus he evolved into a distinct pioneer of photographic Constructivism. He expressed him self with these words; “In order to educate man to a new longing, everyday familiar objects must be shown to him with totally unexpected perspectives and in unexpected situations. New objects should be depicted from different sides in order to provide a complete impression of the object.”  I think this was his work’s definition  and i think it  is a configuration of his understanding about aesthetics and approach. In his graphic designs, his constructivistic style was obvious, but also he liked to integrate elements such as grids, stairs, or overhead wires in his photographic compositions, converting them into abstract constructivistic line structures. So, he followed the same “idea”, but he just changed his medium.

the camera that can be operated by any school boy or girl..

Photography was an undefinable invention in terms of creating the image of the real. What I find really striking to think about; is when people (anyone) started use their own camera. Before, photography had a value about social statute, because only elevated families had the chance to have their photographs taken. In February, 1900, the first  Kodak Brownie was introduced to public and people without any ability to take and print photographs, started to carry cameras. I think, Kodak Brownie was a product that served for the “actual”  intention of photography. I believe that this product had a great role for the development of photography and the use of photography in daily life. Because, it let many people to use photography and it proofed that photography is an individual medium.

I also believe that kodak brownie, helped the development of “art photography”, because after photography was used by anyone, the “intension” of creating an image became more important. People were using Brownie for capturing their personal life and to be able to remember their life in future. I believe this is the most “real” thing about photography.  The artists that chose photography as their medium, were distinguished by their “ideas”. I believe this is the “real” about art. So, with Brownie, the use of photography had increasingly became a medium for anyone, and it  probably disappointed people who were putting “photography” in the middle of their life, because probably they thought they are not any special of being able to create photographic images anymore. When digital photography was invented in 1991, there was a similar situation. People thought that photography was dead, because they thought , again photography was usable by anyone, just like what people thought about Kodak Brownie many years ago . People had felt the same way about painting , when photography was invented at the first place.  But now we surely see that nothing is being dead, painting is alive, photography is alive, even the oldest art form “theatre” is alive, so I believe it is just the technology that changes the process and the format. These transformations are very natural, it derives from the nature of human kind. It will always continue to transform into new mediums, but it will always keep the origin with it self.
